Hello Third Grade Families!

Here are some important events happening in our classroom this week:

Look at these CUTE little Peirrot Clowns! Everyone did such a great job at our Open House Thursday night! Way to go Third Grade!

FYI~Some parents have been asking "how do I get my child's photo"...you should be able to print out your child's photo by choosing the photo, right click, and cut and paste into your home photo program, or onto a word-doc and print out.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend! ~ Mrs. Hansen

The class getting a little boost before performing Friday morning!

Hello Third Grade Families! 5/22/16

Here are a few important events happening in our classroom this week:
  • Solar System projects are DUE THIS TUESDAY, MAY 24th. I'm looking forward to seeing some "Out of This World" creativity and imagination!
  • Open House is THIS THURSDAY, May 26th. Our class will be performing in the Newcastle Circus as clowns. Please sign up for your child to get their face professionally painted before the performance. An email was sent out last week with the link to Google Sheets to sign up. Check your email.
  • All Fines (lunch accounts, library books, etc.) are DUE to be "cleared" this week. Please check with your child if they are owing on their lunch account, or need to return a library book. Most students have been notified by the librarian and cafeteria.
  • BIG DAY of Science with Placer High School was last Tuesday. All students participated in a fun, interactive 90 minute program in which they rotated various hands-on booths! It was awesome! See pictures to the right~

Hello Third Grade Families! 5/10/16

Here are a few important events happening in our classroom this week:
  • Solar System Projects were assigned to students yesterday. A handout went home with your child explaining several different project choices. The due date for all projects is Tuesday, May 24th. Some students were asking if they could do two projects instead of one! Yes! Go for it!
  • Open House is Thursday, May 26th. Student's Solar System Projects will be on display at this time so make sure to mark your calendars to join us. Students will also be performing that evening as part of the Newcastle Circus~ it should be a grand event!
  • Newcastle Community Day is Sunday, May 22nd in Marshall Square. Both Third Grades have been invited to sign during the opening ceremonies. If your child can attend that would be wonderful. Students would need to arrive by 10:45 in order to perform at 11:00. There will be many other fun, family oriented activities~ it should be another grand event!
  • Math Unit Fractions and Equivalent Fractions is our focus for our math unit this month. Please share with your child how you might use, compare, and calculate Equivalent Fractions in your own home.
  • Library Books~hard to believe but last Friday was the last week to check out a library book! This week ALL LIBRARY BOOKS ARE DUE BACK TO THE LIBRARY. If you have any over-due books, or cannot find a past-due book, it is a good idea to pay off the fine. If the book is found, funds will be reimbursed. Our class will continue to go to the library for the last few Fridays to finish up our read-a-loud chapter book with Mrs. Roberts.
  • Spring Portrait Pictures need to be returned to school ASAP. I still have a few students that have not returned either their payment or the pictures. Please turn pictures, as they may become a past-due fine and school may retain report cards until cleared.
A PERSONAL NOTE:
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
for all of the wonderful flowers, chocolates, soaps, lotions, cute lunch totes, pastry goodies, gift cards and much more that I received last week for Teacher Appreciation Week! YOU truly went out of your way, and I wanted to let you know I was very touched by your show of kindness, generosity and thinking about me. It is a pleasure to teach your children each day~ so I thank YOU for the opportunity.

Let me know if you have any questions~  Mrs. Hansen

Let me know if anyone needs help with a costume, training, etc.

Hello Third Grade Families! 9/20/15
Here are some important events happening in our classroom this week:
  • Newcastle School's Accelerated Reader Book List is going home in C~folders this Wednesday. Each book list is individualized according to student's reading range. This is a great resource for you to take to the public library, order from Scholastic, etc. to choose books within your child's reading range that have an Accelerated Reading Test. This was quite a large task to complete, so please keep these packets in a safe place at home.
  • Book Reports are DUE this Tuesday, September 22nd. This was a fun and creative "Paper Bag" book report~ I'm looking forward to seeing all of the student's wonderful ideas!
  • Energy in Science is underway! We were lucky to have had a presentation last Thursday from TESLA~ solar powered cars! We will be continuing our studies throughout this next week.
  • Homework has MUCH improved! Thank you so much for signing the Student Planners and the Homework Helper section in Math~ it has really helped in supporting the responsibilities of the students.
  • Cursive is going to be included in Wednesday's homework starting this week. Students have an individual cursive workbook that they work out of in class. Cursive homework on Wednesdays will support the cursive "letter of the week". Students are encouraged to start using cursive in class and on homework assignments.

Hello Third Grade Families!  9/14/15
Here are some important events happening in our classroom this week:
  • Homework seems to be on a roll! There were a few bumpy days/weeks at the beginning of school with incomplete work and missing assignments, but everyone is doing a MUCH BETTER job of completing their work! Way to go Third Grade!
  • Lexia Computer Program was introduced to the class last Friday in the computer lab. This is a great new program for Newcastle School. It helps support students English Language and Reading Skills. We will be using it in the lab, and also during Reading Groups on our iPads.
  • Speaking of iPads...our class iPads are scheduled to be up and running this week. Unfortunately, Third Grade was the last one on campus to get "rebooted", but they are almost here, and that is good news!
  • Night of Knights Third Grade Project is underway! Parents and teachers have been busy brainstorming ideas, and I think we have all decided on a project~ an outdoor children's sandbox! I will keep you posted as to the details, and I'm sure I'm going to need a few parent helpers and donations to make this project a success!
  • Book Report will be assigned to students this week. It is a simple yet fun project on a book that they have recently finished in Third Grade. Students will have a week to turn it in, and we will be presenting the completed projects in class and hang them for display.

Thank you for all you do to support our Third Grade classroom! This is a great group of students, and you are a great group of supportive parents! I appreciate all of your help! Let me know if you have any questions~ Mrs. Hansen

Working with our Seventh grade Buddy class!

Last Weekend in August!
Here are some important events happening in our classroom this week:
  • Dictionaries from Assistance League were donated to our third grade! Please keep these dictionaries at home for homework support. Thank You Assistance League!
  • Accelerated Reading Program is up and running! Please have your child read one chapter book at a time. Chapter books were checked out of the school library last Friday, and are within each student's 'reading level'. You should see the same chapter book come home every night for homework until the book is completed, and then an AR quiz is taken. AR quizzes are taken in the morning, before school, in the lab which is open from 7:30-7:55 each day. I am sending home an "AR HOME CONNECT" letter this Wednesday which will enable parents to 'connect' to AR via your email. You will then get messages, and view their score, when your child completes a quiz.
  • Parent Volunteers duties will start next week (Tuesday, September 8th)~ NO SCHOOL MONDAY 9/8! I am completing the volunteer schedule and will post it as soon as it is available.
  • TB Clearance: if you are volunteering, you must be TB 'cleared' by our school nurse. Please contact the school office if you need to schedule an appointment. I will be getting a 'cleared' volunteer list from the office this week to make sure all of our volunteers are ready to go!
  • Salt Dough California Maps~ we jumped right in to Social Studies and have been studying geography and the four regions of California. We are planning on making California Salt Dough Maps this Thursday 9/3. If there is any volunteer (or two) out there who could make a LARGE batch of Salt Dough we would greatly appreciate it. Also, if anyone wants to come in to help (and get your hands sticky :) we would appreciate the help! PS~ remember to be TB cleared. Please email me if you can contribute a batch of dough and/or would like to come in and help.
  • Back to School Paperwork: there are just a few students out there that need to turn in Field Trip Permission Slip, money, and Time for Kids slip and payment. Please return as soon as possible~ thank you!

Thank You for all of your classroom support! I appreciate all of help! Let me know if you have any questions, or can help out with 'dough donations' this week :)
Mrs. Hansen

* For the safety of all children here at Newcastle School please drop-off your child(ren) by the amphitheater in the morning. Students are to walk down to the primary playground where supervision begins at 7:30am. Students can then use the restroom, play with friends, and make the transition into the classroom when the bell rings. Students are not to walk in the school hallways unless they are headed to the computer lab to take an AR quiz. Welcome to Third Grade 2015-2016!
I just want to say a big THANK YOU for attending Back to School Night! It was great seeing all of you and hopefully you have a better understanding of what to expect here in Third Grade. If you were not able to attend, a BTSN packet went home with your child today. Please look it over as there is quite a bit of helpful info, and some paperwork and $ all due next Wednesday. That being said, here are some reminders:
  • Money for Field Trips (50.00) and Time for Kids (7.00) all due Wednesday.
  • Book Orders are also due Wednesday. You can use our classroom code: GTT3H
  • Class Directory Information~ if you would like to be included in our directory please return completed flyer.
  • Chapter Books: students read ONE chapter book until done, then take AR Test, then move on to another book. Accelerated Reading Quizzes and Points have started!
  • PE and Rhythm and Movement: are on Tuesdays and Thursdays~ Please have your child wear comfortable clothing and athletic shoes on these days.
  • Math: Your child will have math homework every night. It is helpful to keep corrected math classwork and returned math homework your child brings home. These handouts are helpful to study from for math tests which occur almost every two/three weeks. Once a test is given, these handouts can be thrown out to make room for the following concept.
Please sign nightly math homework on the front stating "Homework Helper", and Initial Student Planner.
Thank You!
